A Review of JT’s World by E. Alan Fleischauer

Summary

Set in the Wild West, JT’s World tells the fictional story of Robert J. Thomas who is a wealthy businessman involved in expanding his business and solving a murder mystery. The story begins during a grand opening set for a recreational center dubbed JT’s World that combines a bar, hotel, shops, a doctor’s office, and a theatre among other spaces. It is located just outside Scottsdale, Arizona and the death of the star singer at the event called Mika Shipley is what attracts the attention of readers to find out what happens next. However, Mika’s death is clearly not the first or the last because other gruesome killings happen as JT Thomas tries to consolidate his business and seek revenge. He teams up with his new-found friends at the bar to go buying cattle. In another incident, JT works with Chip to locate the bounty hunter who apparently shot him in the shoulder. Along the way, JT finds love and this blends the theme of violence in the story with romance.

Positive Aspects

One of the best qualities of JT’s World is the plot, which is full of twists that keep the readers in suspense. In other words, you have to keep reading to find out what happens next. For example, at the beginning of the story, one may think that finding out why Mika died was the only objective, but along the way, more deaths of characters emerge. The author also includes vivid descriptions of places, events, and incidents and this stimulates the readers’ imagination such that they get immersed in the story. As you read the book, you feel like you are playing one of those virtual reality games and you are an active character in the story.

Negative Aspects

Although I liked the novel, I have to admit that it is lengthy and dense especially for those who are used to reading short stories. At first, I thought the book was about solving the mysterious murder case of the woman at the arena, but the narration goes out of the main plot to other supporting tales. When you get back to the main story, you are somewhat confused about how the original mystery will be resolved.

Rating

I enjoyed reading the novel, but I wish the side stories were better integrated into the main plot so that readers do not take a lot of time trying to understand the storyline. The writing was clear and professional. I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars because of the abovementioned shortcoming.

Recommended Audience

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy western world stories about outlaws and criminals being chased by sheriffs and bounty hunters. If you love adventures in the Wild West, this book is perfect for you. However, due to the graphic descriptions of murder and some vulgar language, I would not recommend this book to be read by children.
